220V strip lights and water don't mix
All Mesmerize Lighting 220V strip lights - including ropelights, neon flex, Wire Gen and Wirefree - must never be installed in or near swimming pools, ponds, fountains, water features or anywhere water can collect - even if the product is IP65-rated.
Why IP65 LED strip lights are not enough
Dust-tight and protected against water jets and rain. Not for submersion or standing water.
Protected against temporary immersion (up to 1m for 30 minutes). Not for permanent submersion.
Rated for continuous submersion, as specified by the manufacturer.
An IP rating describes the product housing only. It does not make a mains-voltage product safe around pools. Pool chemicals, constant moisture and pooling water break down the seals and cause early failure.
Safety and compliance
Serious risk to life
220V mains voltage in or near water can cause electric shock, serious injury or death.
SANS 10142-1
Sets strict zones around swimming pools and similar locations, and generally requires safety extra-low voltage (SELV) - typically 12V or 24V - in the zones closest to the water.
What to use instead
Use a low-voltage IP65 or higher product for areas near water. IP65 must never be submerged - only IP68-rated lights may be used underwater.
Use an appropriate isolating driver, installed outside the pool zones.
Install in line with SANS 10142-1.
Warranty exclusion
Products installed in or around swimming pools, ponds, water features or areas exposed to standing water or pool chemicals are excluded from warranty, regardless of IP rating.

LED strip lights and pools - common questions
Can I install LED strip lights near a pool?
Only low-voltage (12V or 24V) LED strip lights - IP65 or higher for areas near the pool (never submerged), and IP68 for anything underwater - installed by a registered electrician in line with SANS 10142-1. 220V LED strip lights must never be installed in or near a pool.
Is an IP65 LED strip light waterproof?
No. IP65 means the strip is protected against dust, rain and water jets. It is not designed for submersion, standing water or pool chemicals.
What IP rating do I need for a pool or pond?
IP68 is the minimum for lights that will be submerged or permanently exposed to water, combined with a 12V or 24V supply.
Does the warranty cover 220V strip lights installed near a pool?
No. 220V strip lights installed in or around pools, ponds, water features or standing water are excluded from warranty, regardless of IP rating.
